And this batch was a proper treat. I really really like aereogramme and have neglected them I think of late. They are a sad loss for british music in general and it was a dark day indeed when they split. I cannot quite count how many times I saw this band though so at least I selfishly got my fix of it before recommending it so heartily here.

The last album they did was just amazing, much more mellow vocally but no less powerful, and The Running Man must be one of the most epic pieces of music ever. By turns beautiful, dark and huge sounding. As for the EP, it is a straight up lesson in atmospherics and I adore it. The Unravelling is an absolute masterpiece of tension and release and Alternate Score is a song that, without the constraints of this project, I would listen to over and over again.

And now the first of the long haul weird moments. I am just getting started on Aerosmith with much more to go. Oddly I am preferring it to AC/DC, which is not something I expected. I think there is just more of a nostalgia about for me personally. They were one of the first bands I saw live, back at Wembley in 1996, and I guess its the memories, more than the songs, that i connect with.

All told, only two major realisations came out of this stint of Aerosmith (apart from realising how many huge songs they have).

1: Living on the edge is a stone cold classic and I love it... it's like it's summer in Virginia in '93 all over again...

2: The Run DMC featuring version of Walk This Way is way better. The guitar sound, production, vocals, the works. Way way better. So well done which ever clever little monkey spotted the potential in that. Pat on the back... then take that pat back because, good as it is, you started rap bloody metal and stole a chunk of my life to me wearing massive jeans and looking a bit retarded. Thank you.

Ignoring my inconsistent use of caps above I should hopefully be able to add a touch more substance to this post. Upon the advice of other people there is going to be a more contextual
base for these posts, and in this case, a bit of a now and then feeling.

Aconite thrill is a UK band, I had never fully listened to this album so was looking forward o it. Back in about 2000 The band I was in at the time, Near Life Experience, headlined the zodiac in Oxford and Aconite thrill was the suport band. They were nice guys and ultimately went on to a bit more success than we managed, this will be a repeated theme throught the time it takes to construct this blog ! So, musically, they mine a sort of hyper technical kind of metal/hardcore with melodic vocals. The playing is faultless and of a very high standard and yet I still found myself a bit bored. As a technical exercise the album is great, as an emotionally engaging body of work it falls short for me sadly. This is a great shame, I was looking forward to this as the first unlistened to album that I was hoping to get wowed by. As it stands, its neaither great nor awful, although has a few moments of nearly being both of those things.

Adequate seven came next. This is one of those uk punk bands that always seem to be roughly on the periphery of things. They seem to be no one's favourite band but also always seem to be a good option as a main support. To put it another way, they have been chosen for every DJ compilation I have put together and yet never been played on the night. So perfectly well executed and perfectly unexciting. To me anyways.

So this section is the musical equivelent of a shrug. The music was all fine but hasn't changed my life. That said, the more I talk with people about this blog, the more pleased I am to be doing it. I just hope to have some more substance soon instead of just... meh

New format ideas... I'm sure this will all come together. Also not sure how much to write, but while I have the chance I figure it's best to write while the music is in my head. So, acka dacka. Well, not sure it works for me at home. The songs are awesome but I got a little bored in all honesty, I think they may also have a mild case of pantera's disease (A terrible affliction which causes all songs to go on for precisely one minute longer than needed, not quite as bad as Tool-itis which causes all songs to be exactly double the intended length, but bad none the less).

Aside from that, I guess I had kind of forgotten about them as a band, they are just so dependably there that it's easy to take them for granted. And the beginning of for those about to rock still counts as one of the greatest beginnings ever! So, not all bad really...

That said, I imagine after this Little stint quite enjoying them, I will likely go back to an oddly ac/dc-less life again. Also, note to self, very annoying to have the same song a few times, This could all get annoying when I reach my own music and demos and such like, still, that could be months off!

On a further note, if anyone wants to comment and get some good old fashioned music arguments going, feel free!

Ok, still have to work out this whole formatting thing. Anyways, yesterday was important for one important reason, upon trying to get to sleep at 4am I realized the flaw in my plan. I listen to music when i go to sleep... what to do, what to do. Well, luckily for yesterday The next album was absence, a record by my old xmas lights band buddy umair. It is chilled as hell and worked wonders, not sure if this totally counts as "listening" but, that said, maybe there's an argument for that whole subliminal thing? Prior to that I listened to the rest of the slumdog soundtrack on the subway. It must be said I actually like much less of it than I thought. I love that riot track and a few other but some is drivel. Mostly its the various vocalists that really don't work for me I think, particularly the love song with lyrics. The lyricless (but with a kind of moody vocal) track is kind of nice, especially with memories of the film, but the one with words is one baby step removed from being celine dion. Turns out, even with headphones on, I was actually sort of embarresed listening to this on the train.

I am now on a big hungover morning with AC/DC, this feels pretty cruel and unusual. More on these noisy young men when I'm through...

So it has begun. It is dawning on me quite how long this will take but here goes! I have loaded up my ipod ready for a subway trip to the east village tonight to a bar called Pianos. I have managed to get my first three songs in at home though just to feel productive. A make me feel 18 again and miss buddy dude and little dude and room 101, so not amazing musically but a cool chunk of life attached to it, which is enough actually to be honest.

A bit of slumdog type action is kind of good and motivating sounding. I can't help but see certain things looming now however. Aerosmith by way of example, why do I need quite the amount I have! this is going to be a big chunk of my weekend. hmmm

Onwards anyways to some discoveries hopefully. There a bunch of things with zero listens ever that I will now finally get to. Wish me luck! (apart from will, who has, cause he's lovely)

A - Z Music Project - it begins

So here’s the plan: I will listen to everything in my iTunes from A – Z in order and catalogue the process. There is 100.54 GB, or 18555 songs. This makes for 55 days, 59 minutes and 51 seconds. So, assuming I do not sleep, or work, or do much of anything, then this will be a month and a half of my life. That said, I may well do some of those things, and as such here are the rules I shall try and follow.

Any time spent listening to music of my choosing will be in pursuit of this project.

Drunken time with friends does not count (this is not intended to make me stay drunk permanently as a get out clause, but still may have that effect).

Drunken time alone does count. In fact, it may be the best time.

I must write about everything I listen to in the blog.

Any time listening to music must be spent LISTENING and not just leaving it on in the background and vaguely saying I paid attention.

I intend to fill my iPods also in order to keep going with this. It also seems I may have long weeks with only Dylan, Bowie, Bjork or The Boss… B is going to be a long month or two. Or three.

I am not entirely sure yet that this isn’t a pointless endeavor but equally, it could be fun and sort of enlightening. It may also take a very very long time. Scratch that, it will take a ludicrous amount of time and at heart is very pointless, that said, I am a teenage boy at heart still and so in the spirit of remaining that age where I wrote top tens of everything, it is time to up the ante and go epic. I think I may be using the drunk excuse a lot.

That said, I like being a drunk and so it shall be employed unashamedly.
